Author Guidelines

Lorimer’s publishing program focuses on the following subject areas: economics, education, gender studies, history, native studies, political science, public policy, sociology, and urban studies.  Many of our books act as introductions to particular subjects (e.g., Police in Canada, Family Violence, Women and Work, The Charter, Canada's Courts, Gay Marriage).  Other books examine current events and public issues from a more personal point of view (e.g., How We Stopped Loving the Bomb, Campus Confidential, Robert Latimer). Our books are written by subject experts, but are intended for the general reading public.

We are actively looking for new book proposals and will carefully consider all submissions that fall within our publishing mandate.  Due to the large volume of mail that we receive, we can only respond to those proposals that interest us. When submitting a proposal, please include a cover letter describing your book idea, a brief outline (either an annotated table of contents or a chapter-by-chapter summary), a writing sample, a schedule for the completion of your work, an estimate of its final length, and your resume.

James Lorimer & Company Ltd., Publishers is a recommender for the Ontario Arts Council's Writers' Reserve Program.  This program assists professional writers by supporting the writing and research of new work and work in progress. One of the OAC's goals is to "increase funding to Aboriginal, culturally diverse and regional artists."
